An Introduction

Sports Medicine Fellowship This one-year fellowship is a joint venture between the Family Medicine Residency programs of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Memorial Health System and the University of Notre Dame. It is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP).

Requirements

The fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Requirements for application include:

  • Completion of a primary-care residency.
  • Board Eligibility in Family Practice, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine.

Location

Two sites host the fellowship: Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and the Memorial-Leighton HealthPlex, both in South Bend, Indiana. This beautiful, thriving community has a population of about 250,000. It's situated on the St. Joseph River, about 40 minutes from Lake Michigan and 1-1/2 hours from Chicago. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, Indiana University South Bend, Holy Cross College, Saint Mary's College, Bethel College and the College Football Hall of Fame all make their home in South Bend.

Compensation

  • 2010-2011 Fellow Salary:  $50,000.
  • Benefits include disability, health and life insurance.
  • CME money is available to help defray the cost of trips to national conventions of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM).
  • Two weeks are allowed off for vacation, with one to two weeks for CME.

Sports medicine experiences

Training-room and sideline experience is provided as follows:

  • at the high-school level, with each fellow assigned to his or her own school
  • at the college level (Bethel College, Saint Mary's College and the University of Notre Dame)

Included in the Sports Medicine Fellowship are:

  • Weekly round-table discussions with Notre Dame staff
  • Weekly lecture series
  • Monthly Journal Club
  • Anatomy Review by Cadaver Dissection

Scholarly Activity

  • Each fellow is required to complete a research project or scholarly topic review for publication.
  • Presentations at ACSM and AMMSM conferences are encouraged.

Continuity primary care clinic

Fellows will spend one half-day in a family practice continuity clinic, either at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center or Memorial Hospital.

AMSSM Charter Member and Board of Directors. ACSM Fellow. American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, affiliate. AAFP Fellow.

Welcome Jennifer Malcolm, D.O. our Sports Medicine Fellow for 2011-2012. Jennifer completed her residency at the Medical College of Georgia’s Family Medicine Residency Program and she is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
