2011 Most Wired Hospital
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) has been recognized as one of “America’s Most Wired” hospitals according to Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Survey. This recognition for both our Mishawaka and Plymouth hospitals is based on technology advancements made by organizations to enhance patient care, clinical quality, and patient safety. SJRMC is the first and only hospital system in Northern Indiana to receive this important designation.
Patient safety is at the forefront of the information system strategy at SJRMC. Locally, we have been the leaders in the implementation of numerous technologies that prevent errors and enhance patient safety, including Electronic Health Records, Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and our affiliation with Michiana Health Information Network (MHIN) to provide Electronic Health Record Technology to our Physician Network.
SJRMC's Family Medicine Residency Program
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program has been granted institutional accreditation for a full five years – the maximum period awarded – by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
The ACGME is the governing body responsible for certifying medical training programs for residents and fellows, as well as the institutions that provide the training programs.
"Congratulations to all of you, our Medical Education leadership, and all of the training program directors," said Al Gutierrez, SJRMC's President and CEO, addressing the entire Family Medicine Residency Program. "This is no easy feat and is a really superb reflection of the educational quality of our training programs."
"I am very happy with all the hard work that everyone involved with our program has contributed to this," said Dr. Martin Wieschhaus, Director of SJRMC's Family Medicine Residency Program. "The day to day efforts put forth make this a great educational atmosphere and a great place for so many patients to come for quality health care."
American Family Physician, the American Academy of Family Physicians primary journal, featured the work and byline of a very familiar name at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Julia Fashner, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., Associate Director of SJRMC's Family Medicine Residency Program, was published in the June 15th edition of American Family Physician. Her article, "Herpes Zoster (shingles) and Postherpetic Neuralgia," discussed prevention and management of shingles. Dr. Fashner co-wrote the article with Amanda Bell, M.D., of Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Read More

SJRMC’s program was one of ten recognized in the United States. The celebrated residencies achieved excellence in clinical practice by developing creative solutions that resulted in increased immunization rates in their communities.
"This recognition shows the dedication our Family Medicine Residency Program has to all those we serve here everyday”, said Dr. Martin Wieschhaus, Program Director. “This was truly a team effort and reflected an impressive blend of organizational, clinical, and academic skills within a group of high functioning individuals."

A group of 14 physicians and other healthcare providers carried out a care-giving mission to Haiti in the aftermath of the recent earthquake.
The team was comprised of Emergency Department doctors, doctors specializing in orthopaedics, and general surgeons from Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, as well as other local hospitals and surgery centers.
The group left from South Bend on February 2, 2010 for Sacred Heart Hospital in Northeastern Haiti.
Realizing the hospital’s desperate need for equipment, they arranged to take life-saving equipment for the old Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, including the Autoclave self-sustaining sterilization unit that can sterilize medical instruments much more so than boiling water, which is the current method being used in Haiti.
The team faced this emotionally difficult task with great enthusiasm noting that it was a “once in a lifetime experience”.

1st Year resident, Marin Garcia, MD expressed the following:
"I am impressed with the new hospital layout.
The emergency department is adjacent to imaging and
cardiovascular diagnostics. The NICU is on the same
floor as the labor & delivery and postpartum. Everything
seems efficiently laid out and all in less overall
square footage. Moreover, the latest technology implemented
in the new hospital makes accessibility and the use
of electronic records simple."

"SJRMC's New Mishawaka Hospital will Prompt Major
Medical Growth", states Mishawaka Mayor Jeff Rea.

The median home price in South Bend is $89,000 and "prices
have been rising for almost a year now," real
estate consultant Barbara Corcoran said recently. "Still
the median price is only half of what it is in the
rest of the nation."
The criteria Corcoran used in compiling the list of "top
10 cities for best home bargains" involved identifying
cities across the country that scored best on a National
Association of Realtors report, looking specifically
for areas when median house prices increase, Corcoran's
office said via email. To assess quality of schools
and job growth, Corcoran's researchers used the Web
