Family Medicine Center Over 3,500 families, or 11,000 patients, are cared for in the Family Medicine Center. In all cases patients are selected as family units in order to provide the resident physician with the experience of caring for an entire family.

Each resident spends time in the Family Medicine Center: a minimum of one half-day per week the first year, two half-days per week the second year, and three half-days per week the third year. Residents have their own assigned families for whom they are responsible.

The Family Medicine Center, connected to the main hospital by an underground tunnel, functions as a private office with regularly scheduled office hours. A resident's patient population is an average of:

  • 80 families for the first year
  • 200 families for the second year
  • 300 families for the third year

The clinic also provides an economical OB Clinic for women of the community. Residents deliver an average of over 400 babies annually in The Family Birthplace, recently expanded from a 14 to 21 bed unit.

Our clinical pharmacist organizes an indigent drug program which provides a variety of prescription medications to our patients at a reduced cost. He also participates in resident teaching through noon conference lectures, didactic sessions, and one-on-one consultations. This has been an invaluable resource for our residents.

Residents are able to become proficient at a wide variety of procedures during their training at the Family Medicine Center including:

  • Anoscopy
  • Casting/Splinting
  • Colposcopy with biopsy
  • Cryosurgery (both cervical and skin)
  • EKG
  • Endometrial Biopsies and curettage
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (for diagnostic and screening purposes)
  • Incision and Drainage
  • Joint injection and aspiration
  • Laceration repair
  • LEEP (both cervical and dermatologic)
  • Non-stress testing (for OB patients)
  • Pulmonary function testing (spirometry)
  • Skin Biopsy and skin lesion removal
  • Treadmill Stress Tests
  • Ultrasound (obstetrical)
  • Wart removal (condyloma and verrucae)

Our virtual Flexible Sigmoidoscopy/Colonoscopy simulator enables our residents to learn the procedures by first performing them on simulated patients. This has proven to be an excellent teaching tool and very popular with our residents.
