Hello there! My name is Chirag Patel and I am a 2nd year resident at SJRMC. It has been such a wonderful feeling being a resident here which is now my second home in terms of friendship, love and caring. Right now I am on an OB rotation which is an excellent rotation to enhance our knowledge.
I am on call so my day starts around 6:40 a.m., a bit earlier than usual. I get up at around 5:30 and make sure that I grab everything I need for the next 24 hours. I start my day on the ante partum side, to see what things are lined up for me. I am lucky to have a nice team of residents on OB who do not care if another resident rounds on more patients than they do. We round on patients as a team even though we try to keep continuity by trying to follow the same patients everyday. We also look after the resident who is post call and suggest he go home and grab some good sleep so he can come back refreshed for the next day.
My son “Shubh” is a darling, and asks me when I get back home how many new babies I delivered. He is more interested in knowing how many were boys and did anyone name their newborn baby “Kevin.” His best friend’s name is Kevin and he loves this name, sometimes wondering why we didn’t name him Kevin.
Today the rounds are longer as there are a lot of patients and just two residents rounding on all the patients this weekend. Even though today is a weekend day, it is very busy on the OB floor. Both the ante partum as well as the postpartum side is full. Countless triages, about 5-7 patients laboring at any given time and we’ve had two C- sections already. I guess medicine is busy as well, as two of my own patients have been admitted, adding two more patients to round on tomorrow morning. One of my own patients who was admitted to the ICU coded and I had to step down from the OB floor to see him. I promised the new first years that I will be available for any help they need “24/7” but seems that today we both need help. Tomorrow is Monday, which is “OB pool day”. We see high risk OB clinic patients, so I will be tied up in the clinic until noon which makes me pity myself. The OB clinic is an excellent learning opportunity where we staff high risk OB patients with the OB Gyn Associates group. Under their direction, we understand critical situations and solutions. We are so lucky to have excellent Family Medicine Center directors who guide our every step towards completing graduation requirements.
It has been so busy that I am writing this as a stress reliever at 3 a.m. while I wait for one of my patients to start pushing…..sorry I need to go!
