Information for Applicants

Thank you for your interest in the Family Medicine Residency Program at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. We accept applications for our Allopathic & Osteopathic programs through ERAS – the Electronic Residency Application Service. Please visit http://www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm and follow the directions provided in order to apply.

The Application Process

The St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the National Matching Service (NMS). All applicants for first year residency positions must register with the NRMP, which administers ERAS, or NMS.

In order to be considered, a complete application file must be submitted. The following is a list of our application criteria and information required for application to our residency program:

  • Must have graduated medical school within the past 5 years
  • Passing score of USMLE or COMLEX
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
  • ERAS application
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Medical school transcripts
  • Dean’s Letter
  • Personal statement addressing why Family Medicine is your choice of specialties and also your interest in our program specifically
  • Explanations concerning any unsuccessfully completed medical school rotations or any gaps/interruptions in your medical education or medical employment
  • International Medical Graduates - ECFMG certification is required at the time your ERAS application is submitted.

Following review of all completed application documents, selected applicants will be notified by e-mail. Your application may be placed on hold if incomplete and reviewed once all information is received.

A Typical Interview Day

We invite each interview candidate to an informal dinner with a resident on the evening prior to the interview.

During the interview day the applicant will meet with faculty and residents, attend noon conference and tour our facilities.

Accommodations while you are in South Bend

Hotel accommodations are provided and will be arranged by the Program Coordinator at the time an interview is scheduled.
